Elinchrom Quadra RX very quick test

Today, I went to the Elinchrom French importer located in Paris : Db Photo. I'll probably buy a Ranger RX soon like a lot of sport photographers who love to work outside with a sunny blue sky or in the deep snow.

The Ranger RX and his 1100 W/sec is probably one of the most powerful/well and strong made/battery portable kit at this price. But I absolutely wanted to test his little brother, the Quadra RX, which is really lighter but has also less power (400 W/sec). I knew it could be a very good kit for a lot of situations like portrait, corporate or wedding, but I wanted to know if it could over power the sun like his big brother! Well, sounds like you can easily shoot outside during a sunny day, it's really simple to use and easy to take away wherever you want. But, if you want to shoot with a direct sun and get a dark blue sky, it will be hard or even impossible.

Here are some few pics of my 3 minute test I did in the street in the front of the shop. Thanks to the Db Photo staff for that.
Quadra RX @ 1/2 power with umbrella, cam left @ 1,5/2 m from the model. Canon 7D @ ISO 100, f/8, 1/250
Quadra RX @ 1/1 power with umbrella, cam left @ 1,5/2 m from the model. Canon 7D @ ISO 100, f/8, 1/250
Quadra RX @ 1/1 power with umbrella, cam left @ 1,5/2 m from the model. Canon 7D @ ISO 100, f/13, 1/250
Quadra RX @ 1/1 power with umbrella, cam left @ 1,5/2 m from the model. Canon 7D @ ISO 100, f/18, 1/250
Quadra RX @ 1/1 power (or a bit less) with umbrella, cam left @ 1,5/2 m from the model. Canon 7D @ ISO 100, f/10, 1/250

So, for the use I want, the Quadra RX has not enough power but seems to be a very good kit for a lot of things even a studio shoot.

If you want to read more about the Elinchrom Ranger RX and the Quadra RX, the great photographer Dan Carr wrote a good review on his blog.
